Letterbox
The Letterbox effect blocks off the top and bottom of the screen to give the look of a widescreen movie to your home movies.
Sliders
Shift - This shifts the image up and down behind the letterbox mask so that you can show the portion of the image that you want.
Size - Controls the size of the letterbox mask. By default it is set to a standard movie letterbox size.
Squash - Squashes the image down to make more of the image visible.
Usage
You should first try to use the Shift parameter first to try to fit what you want into the visible part of the image, and only after that try to use the Squash parameter.
